اكتشاف "كوخ الساحرات" في شمال غرب إنجلتراDid this house belong to witches?Engineers in the north-west of England made an eerie discovery: a house which some believe belonged to witches.
The well-preserved cottage was unearthed during a construction project near Pendle Hill, an area which has been associated with the supernatural for centuries.
Historians are now speculating that the cottage belonged to the so-called Pendle Witches. These were women who were persecuted in the 17th Century on grounds of witchcraft.
Local historian Simon Entwhistle described the situation of the women:
"Their only crime in life was to be poor really and they would beg off local people. And if local people wouldn't cough up any money, they [would] curse them and some of them actually believed they did, in fact, have witch's powers."
The building, which also dates from the 17th Century, contained a sealed room, with the bones of a cat bricked into the wall.
It is believed the cat was buried alive to protect the cottage's inhabitants from evil spirits.
Whatever the story behind the house, its discovery is likely only to add to the mystical allure of Pendle Hill.
So, did witches exist hundreds of years ago? Do they still exist today? Perhaps you've an eerie story from your own area to share.
